SURTREAT TPS II N – Concrete, Brick, Stone and Mortar

SURTREAT TPS II N is an alkali silica reaction (ASR) inhibitor. SURTREAT TPS II N retains it’s ability to penetrate over the extended period of time. It contains a quantity of lithium which when placed in fresh or hardened concrete at a lithium concentration in the cement phase of about 100ppm will inhibit ASR initiation and prevent further crack formation and/or concrete expansion.

Benefits

Our formula makes for an outstanding one part corrosion inhibitor for hardened steel reinforced concretes. With proven laboratory and site performance, our product can be applied to a variety of surfaces. The formula is also environmentally friendly, breathable, extremely durable, and penetrates easily. Once applied, it can not be peeled or scratched off of the original surface and can be painted, coated, or overlaid as needed.

Special Features

SURTREAT TPS II N is surface applied to existing concrete where ASR is confirmed or suspected in a manner which enables it to penetrate the surface and form a lithium ion concentration in the 100ppm range in the concrete cement phase. SURTREAT TPS II N inhibits further crack formation and concrete growth due to ASR. It may also be added to fresh concrete mix where the potential for ASR is expected. The performance of SURTREAT TPS II N has been verified based on ASTM C 227 where at 100ppm lithium in cement phase the 250 day expansion was less than 0.05% in the presence of reactive aggregates and confirmed in the field.

Packaging

5 gallon pail and 55 gallon drum.

Caution and Safety

Handling: SURTREAT TPS II N is to be applied by professional contractors only. All applicators should wear OSHA and NIOSH recommended protective equipment. Do not use or dilute the product in closed areas without adequate ventilation. Immediately close the container after removal of the solution. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothing. Do not smoke, eat or drink during application. Wash thoroughly after handling. Keep out of reach of children. Do not inhale or ingest or modify the solution. Refer to MSDS.

Clean Up: In case of spills or leaks, wear suitable protective equipment. Contain spill and collect with absorbent material or process and transfer to a suitable container, ventilate area. Avoid contact. Dispose of in accordance with current, applicable local, state and federal regulations.

Precautions: KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN. DO NOT SWALLOW. Use with adequate ventilation. Avoid mist and direct contact with eyes, skin and clothing. Wear suitable protective goggles, gloves, and clothing. In case of insufficient ventilation, wear suitable respiratory equipment. If you feel ill, seek medical advice. Wash clothing prior to re-use.

Physical / Chemical Characteristics

Flashpoint: none pH: 9.5 (+/-0.5)
Appearance and odor: clear liquid with mild chemical smell
Shelf life: 24 months in an unsealed factory container

Where To Use

For use on structures which exhibit symptoms of ASR growth crack formation and aggregate popping. Applicable to all types of structures composed of Portland cement concrete – bridges, roadways, outdoor storage pads, airport runways and tarmac areas, building components and other PCC structures exposed to the elements. SURTREAT TPS II N can also be added to fresh concrete.

Application Procedure

Surface preparation: Prior to applying SURTREAT TPS II N the surface must be clean, sound, and reasonably dry.

Application: SURTREAT TPS II N is applied by roller, brush or spray onto the concrete surface. When spraying, use conventional airless spray system or hand-pressure equipment. A minimum of two applications is usually required. Apply liberally until substrate is saturated. Spread with squeegee, brush or roller until adsorbed. Waiting time between applications, will vary depending on environmental conditions and absorbency of substrate, is typically one hour. When applying prior to installation of a repair mortar, concrete overlay, coating or membrane, care must be taken to remove any SURTREAT TPS II N residue before the mortar or concrete is applied. This can be achieved by rinsing with water, pressure washing or grit blasting. After application, allow substrate to dry before applying coating or membrane.

Distribution rates should be calculated for individual projects as they will vary depending on concrete composition and concrete properties. It is not unusual to see distribution rates for SURTREAT TPS II N in the 70 – 100 sf/gal range.

Limitations

  • Minimum ambient temperature and substrate temperature of 35F. Do not apply when temperature is expected to fall below freezing within twelve hours.
  • SURTREAT TPS II N will not penetrate sealers, coatings, paints, and membranes.
