Parking Garages

Parking Garages ✩

Application Note

Introduction

The Problem

Parking garages are frequently exposed to harsh conditions such as chloride infiltration from deicing salts, water ingress, and continuous vehicle traffic, leading to corrosion, cracking, and structural deterioration. Over time, these conditions can compromise the safety and durability of the structure. Additionally, the prevalence of Electric Vehicles, which tend to much heavier than gasoline equivalent, can put stress on the garage deck load factor. An effective repair and reinforcement strategy is essential to mitigate corrosion, strengthen the structure, and extend its service life.

Mitigation Strategy

The recommended strategy for parking garage rehabilitation involves treating two key types of areas:

  1. Areas Requiring Structural Reinforcement and Load-Bearing Enhancement: These zones show signs of weakened structural capacity and demand additional reinforcement to restore or increase their load-bearing capabilities.

  2. Areas Impacted by Corrosion and Environmental Degradation: These sections are subject to corrosion or environmental exposure and require treatments to halt deterioration and extend the structure’s service life, but do not need additional load-bearing support.
